123 Association Executives Earn ASAE’s Prestigious CAE Credential

One hundred and twenty-three association executives have earned their Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential this month from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), joining more than 3,000 industry leaders worldwide.

The Spring 2004 class of CAEs successfully completed the CAE examination administered nationwide on May 4, 2004. They will be honored along with the Winter 2004 and Winter/Spring 2003 Class of CAEs during ASAE’s Annual Meeting and Exposition, being held at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, MN, August 14-17, 2004.

Since its inception in 1960, the CAE designation has been conferred upon executives who demonstrate high levels of association management knowledge, ethics and leadership. Prior to certification, applicants are rated on their experience and professional development in the association management profession and must successfully complete the comprehensive exam.  A listing by state of the Spring 2004 class of CAEs can be viewed at
http://www.asaenet.org/asae/cda/index/1,1584,ETI20310_MEN1,00.html.

The next round of CAE examinations will be administered nationwide on December 3, 2004. The late application deadline for this exam is October 4, 2004. The exam is held at ASAE Headquarters in Washington, DC, and at several other locations nationally and internationally. For more details about the CAE exam, contact Diane K. Smith, or Greg Melia, ASAE Credentialing Services, at 202-626-2770 or e-mail

The Duh Factor
If intergenerational issues are not on your association’s radar screen, they should be. When not causing tension in the office, these differences present an opportunity for you and your staff to examine assumptions and learn from ignorance.

Let’s Get Together
Web-based communities of practice help members network and learn. See how one organization has used the concept to increase member value even as it learned the techniques for effective community management.

Celebration of the Century
Association milestones are a great time to remember where you’ve been, examine where you are, and look forward to where you’re going for the staff, membership, and the industry. Learn how to incorporate all of these elements into your next association anniversary celebration.

Healthy Alternatives
As organizations await passage of association health plan legislation, several associations are coming up with ways to offer health insurance solutions to their members—sans legislation.

Follow the Leaders

Make a Difference in Minneapolis—Feed the Mind through "Reach Out and Read"

Reach Out and Read (ROR)
makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. It is a national program with more than 2,000 sites across the country, with locations in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, ROR helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.

During ASAE Minneapolis 2004, books will be donated to St. Joseph's Home for Children, a clinic which cares for children in crisis by addressing immediate needs for shelter and stability and offering long-term solutions to emotional and behavioral issues. St. Joseph's specializes in assessment and crisis intervention and residential programming, especially for children with severe emotional and behavioral problems. They also provide central intake services for children removed from their home due to abuse or instability.

Guidelines for contributing books:
ROR programs accept donations of new, developmentally and culturally appropriate books. A bibliography of favorite books to choose from, carefully selected to meet the needs of children served by ROR, is available. This is a guideline, not an exhaustive list. To access the wishlist at Amazon.com:

  • Go to www.Amazon.com
  • At the top of the screen, select “Wish List”
  • On the right-hand side, use the Wish List Search and enter: Feed the Mind
  • Select 1. Feed the Mind’s Wish List
  • You will find more than 100 publications listed with prices ranging from $3.99 for a board book to $20.37 for a set of Curious George books
  • When you select a book from this list, you will be able to ship it directly to St. Joseph’s – we’ve entered their address for you!
  • If your purchase totals $25 or more, Amazon provides free shipping!

You may also bring a book or a financial contribution to the Feed the Mind booth in the ASAE Services area in the Minneapolis Convention Center. Used books must be gently used (covers and pages intact, clean and readable). Hardcover picture books with brightly colored pictures and interesting stories are ideal. ROR’s focus is on children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years, although books for older children will be accepted.
Books about sensitive issues like divorce, abuse or death cannot be accepted. If included, they will be discarded.

Last Chance—ASAE's 2004 Association Executive Compensation & Benefits Survey

Has your organization responded to the 2004 Association Executive Compensation & Benefits Survey? This is your last chance to have your association included in this important study. Please fax your completed survey to Shawn Six at (614) 802-2309 as soon as possible.

Final Reports
Using the results of the survey, we will produce the Association Executive Compensation & Benefits Study (AECBS) and the Blue Chip Association Executive Compensation and Benefits Study (Blue Chip). The AECBS will contain salary and benefits information for more than 30 positions, which includes the CEO and Deputy CEO. The Blue Chip focuses on compensation and benefits information for CEOs and management staff in organizations where the CEO is highly compensated. Please refer to the order form for a more detailed description of the studies.

Association Quick Fact — Test Your Knowledge!

As association executives, it is important to be educated on the association industry as a whole.  To help you achieve that goal, ASAE will offer a weekly “Association Quick Fact” in the ASAE Weekly Bulletin.  Pass these facts along to your peers, staff, and members–so that they too can be empowered with knowledge about the exciting world of the association industry.

DID YOU KNOW...
The ripple effect of association activities on other sectors of the economy is demonstrated by the impact of association meetings and conventions on the travel and hospitality industry. According to ASAE research, association-sponsored meetings and conventions now account for more than 26 million overnight stays in hotels each year.
