Registered Travel Pilot Program Expanding

Frequent fliers to Minneapolis, the site of this month’s ASAE Annual Meeting and Exposition, are helping to test a new “Registered Traveler Pilot Program” designed to expedite the screening process at select airports through use of a new “smart card” containing biometric information for identity confirmation.

The pilot program was launched in Minneapolis with Northwest Airlines last month, and also debuted last week at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with United Airlines. Plans call for the program to expand to three other airports this summer – George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, with Continental Airlines, will launch in the next couple of weeks; and Boston’s Logan International and Washington, DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, both with American Airlines, will start testing the program by the end of August.

Approved registered travelers, typically frequent fliers invited to participate by the various airlines, will be provided with the “smart cards” containing a fingerprint and iris scan confirming their identity. These travelers will still go through primary screening, but will then be directed to a designated checkpoint lane where they can swipe their “smart card” and avoid more extensive secondary screening.
