Make a Difference in Minneapolis-Feed the Mind through "Reach Out and Read"

Reach Out and Read (ROR) makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. It is a national program with more than 2,000 sites across the country, with locations in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam.  During ASAE Minneapolis 2004, books will be donated to St. Joseph's Home for Children, a clinic which cares for children in crisis by addressing immediate needs for shelter and stability, and offering long-term solutions to emotional and behavioral issues.

If you are attending ASAE Minneapolis 2004, bring your books or financial contribution to the Feed the Mind Booth in the ASAE Services area, Minneapolis Convention Center. Used books must be gently used (covers and pages intact, clean, and readable). Hardcover picture books with brightly colored pictures and interesting stories are ideal. ROR’s focus is on children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years, although books for older children will be accepted.  Books about sensitive issues like divorce, abuse, or death cannot be accepted. If included, they will be discarded.

If you aren’t attending ASAE Minneapolis 2004, you can still participate.  You can purchase books online at Amazon.com.  Simply go to
www.amazon.com and select “Wish List”.  Under the “Wish List Search”, enter Feed the Mind.  When you select a book from this list, you will be able to ship it directly to St. Joseph’s - we’ve entered their address for you!   If your purchase totals $25 or more, Amazon provides free shipping.

The State of Community Assessment (SOCA) Tool

Grow a stronger, more vital association by cultivating a sense of community.

“As an association, you are, by default, a community. Community is more than just an intangible, immeasurable, static concept. Instead, it is a real strategy that can be measured, acted upon, grown and nurtured to make an association vibrant and dynamic and responsive to member needs.”
     -   Meg Tully, Membership & Chapter Director
         International Erosion Control Association
         Steamboat Springs, CO

The State of Community Assessment (SOCA) Tool, the Center for Association Leadership’s guiding benchmark of community cohesion, is an immensely accurate indicator that provides valuable information on your members, volunteer leaders, and staff.  The SOCA survey, which has proven its accuracy through rigorous testing, looks at all factors of community and gauges how closely connected individuals feel to their organization.  More importantly, SOCA provides clarification of how these sentiments translate into participation rates at annual meetings, revenue dollars, and volunteer participation.

SOCA is valuable to your organization because it evaluates attitudes, behaviors, and demographics collectively, which helps you learn about the relationships between them.  By measuring strengths and weaknesses in the eyes of your members and employees, your organization can identify leverage points for allocating community resources.  For more information visit www.asaefoundation.org and look under “Research & Programs”.

Association Quick Fact – Test Your Knowledge!
As association executives, it is important to be educated on the association industry as a whole.  To help you achieve that goal, ASAE will offer a weekly “Association Quick Fact” in the ASAE Weekly Bulletin.  Pass these facts along to your peers, staff, and members–so that they too can be empowered with knowledge about the exciting world of the association industry.

DID YOU KNOW...
Some noteworthy association activities include industry research, which seven out of 10 associations offer at a total cost of $615 million a year; and setting industry product and service standards for their industries, which three of five provide at a total cost of about $884 million annually. A survey found that members spend more than $1.1 billion to comply with these association-set standards, which safeguard consumers and provide other valuable benefits.
