ASAE Issues Report on Nonprofit Governance
In response to an increasing amount of attention on nonprofit governance at the federal and state levels over the past year, ASAE released a report late last week entitled "Changing Expectations for Nonprofit Organization Governance.”
The purpose of the report is not to set a rigid set of guidelines for organizations to follow, but rather to give them a starting point for considering the current climate and whether their own governance practices are up to par. In the course of preparing this document, which began shortly after the conclusion of the National Consensus Conference on Nonprofit Governance, co-sponsored by ASAE and NYSAE back in January, ASAE was able to incorporate the insights and opinions of a diverse group of ASAE members and volunteers, including specialists in law, ethics, financial disclosures, and management practices. ASAE is thankful for their participation. The report can be found on ASAE’s Advocacy Web site, managed by Capitol Advantage, at: http://ffs.capwiz.com/asae/ChangingExpectations_Governance_Rept9_9_04.pdf.
As has been reported in Inroads earlier this year, ASAE submitted testimony to the Senate Finance Committee for a hearing in June that focused on charity reform, and participated in a roundtable discussion in July with Finance Committee staff who are preparing to draft legislation that more clearly defines expectations for nonprofit governance. ASAE will continue to follow this issue closely and update readers whenever possible.

Help Out Fellow American's Through Florida Hurricane Relief Fund
Associations play a lasting role in shaping America's communities - in many cases, by responding to pressing social and economic concerns through the mobilization of their members and resources for the greater good. Such an opportunity now exists for all of us within the association management community to assist individuals and communities in the state of Florida, which is in desperate need of relief following the recent hurricanes and tropical storms that have battered the entire state. Florida Gov. Jebb Bush has recently created the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, to accept donations to help the victims of the recent hurricanes, many of whom have been displaced from their homes and are in need of temporary housing and basic care. Donations received by this fund will be used to meet needs not being met by other organizations. Individuals as well as associations can support this effort. Communities affected by these disasters will decide how funds are dispersed. Money will go first where it is most needed. The most severely damaged counties in Florida will receive the largest percentage of funds. All donations are tax-deductible, and the fund is operating under the oversight of a steering committee chaired by former U.S. Senator Connie Mack. Checks can be made payable to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund and mailed to: Volunteer Florida Foundation, ATTN: Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, 401 South Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301. To make a credit card donation, please call 1-800-FL-HELP-1 or visit www.FLAHurricaneFund.org. For more information, contact Linda Chreno, CAE, Executive Vice President, Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE) at 850-222-7994 or e-mail her at Linda@fsae.org.
