FCC Fax Update

As ASAE announced last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted a new six-month stay, until July 1, 2005, of the proposed fax regulations. Our work is not done, however. ASAE and the Fax Ban Coalition are still working diligently to have S. 2603 passed by the Senate.

The coalition has succeeded in having the bill "hot-lined," readying it for passage by the Senate by Unanimous Consent (UC).  The only hold-up now to UC passage seems to be some concerns that Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has with the bill. ASAE urgently asks that any association executive who can directly contact or knows someone who can directly contact the Senator herself do so with the following message, "Please Pass S.2603 Now!"

As has been reported, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee filed its report Sept. 29 on S. 2603, which it passed July 22, meaning that the bill is now ready to move to the Senate floor for a full vote. The full House passed the companion bill, H.R. 4600, on July 20. Both bills restore the "established business relationship" provision so that legitimate, business-to-business and association-to-member fax communications can continue unimpeded.
