ASAE’s Graham to Serve on IS Task Force

John H. Graham IV, CAE, president and CEO of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), has accepted an invitation to serve on an advisory group working on recommendations that might strengthen good governance and ethical conduct of charitable and philanthropic organizations.

The work group will advise a Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, convened by Independent Sector at the request of the Senate Finance Committee, which is currently considering a number of proposed legislative reforms related to governance, transparency, and financial accountability in the tax-exempt sector.

Graham will serve as a member of the Financial Accountability and Transparency Work Group, which will focus on three critical issue areas: 1) improving accuracy and accessibility of financial data including disclosure, revisions to Form 990, penalties for inaccurate/incomplete returns, and electronic filing; 2) enhanced disclosure of performance and financial data; and 3) financial audits and reviews. Other working groups created by the IS panel will focus on Governance and Fiduciary Responsibility; Oversight and Self-Regulation; Legal Framework; and Small Organizations.

The Finance Committee has asked that the panel provide a report of its initial findings and recommendations by February 2005 and a final report in the spring of 2005. The Finance Committee is considering a 19-page staff discussion draft of proposed legislative reforms, first released at a June hearing on charitable abuses at which a number of nonprofit leaders, including ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE, testified.

“I look forward to adding the perspective of the association community to the work group’s deliberations on this critical issue of nonprofit governance,” Graham said. “This is an issue potentially impacting all exempt organizations, despite the Senate Finance Committee’s focus on charitable and philanthropic groups. Obviously, we want to give our legislators as much insight as possible into our community and help shape any legislation that may be coming in the months ahead.”

EXECUTIVE UPDATE Takes Home Two Magazine Awards at Annual Folio:Show

Executive Update, the monthly magazine of The Center for Association Leadership, was honored with two magazine awards November 15th at the annual Folio:Show in New York City.

The Folio:Show is the preeminent educational conference for the $40 billion magazine publishing industry. The 2004 conference kicked off November 15th with a Celebration of Excellence Awards Gala at the New York Hilton. The awards gala included presentations of the 18th Annual Ozzie Awards and the 15th Annual Eddie Awards.

Executive Update won the Gold Ozzie Award for “Best Table of Contents – B-to-B,” and the Bronze Eddie Award for “Association Magazine, circulation six or more times per year.”

The Ozzie Awards are open to all magazines and are given in recognition of excellence in overall magazine design. A distinguished panel of judges from the magazine industry selects the winners based on design and entry statements.

The Eddie Awards are open to all magazines - consumer, b-to-b, associations and online. This is a unique competition in which magazines are evaluated against their own mission statement, rather than against the competition. Entrants are judged on how well they fulfill their mission statements, the quality of their content and how the overall design and production supports their mission.

“All of us at The Center for Association Leadership are very proud of the day-to-day work that goes into producing such a high-quality and eminently informative magazine as Executive Update,” said Susan Sarfati, CAE, president and CEO of The Center and executive vice president of ASAE. “We applaud the efforts of the Executive Update staff and I know they are very rightfully honored by the recognition from their peers in the magazine publishing field.”

Other recent awards for Executive Update include two Society of National Association Publications’ (SNAP) 2004 Excel Awards (Silver – General Excellence; Gold – Cover Photo Illustration); five 2004 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence, including an APEX Grand Award for Design & Illustration Cover; and three 2004 Tabbies, including the Tabbies Gold Award for Table of Contents.

The Center for Association Leadership is the premier provider of learning, future focused and strategic research, and knowledge resources for ASAE and the association community. The Center and its partner organization, the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), provide resources, education, ideas and advocacy to enhance the power and performance of the association community.
