Congressional Travel Analysis Centers on Nonprofits
A new study conducted by a campaign finance disclosure Web site reveals that members of Congress have taken more than 5,000 privately funded trips over the past five years, and that the majority of these trips were paid for by charitable organizations and trade associations.
The Web site, http://www.politicalmoneyline.com/, states that of the $16 million in privately-funded trips taken by members of Congress since 2000, almost $8.8 million were paid for by 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. The original donors to these groups are not disclosed in the travel reports, the study said. The remaining $7.3 million in privately funded travel came primarily from trade associations ($4 million) and corporations ($2 million).
While these organizations may be paying for travel to educate members of Congress on specific issues or topics, the study noted that travel reports filed by some members and staff were incomplete or inaccurate in that they sometimes did not include names of sponsoring organizations, amounts of travel costs and the purpose of the trips.

Take Your Association Performance to the Extreme!
Attend the 2005 Annual Meeting & Exposition August 13–16, 2005 Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, Nashville

You might not think that attending an annual meeting is extreme. But it can be. Especially when you attend the ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership 2005 Annual Meeting & Exposition, August 13–16, Nashville.
Here's a preview of our General Sessions
|
"Extreme Marketing for Associations," with Philip Kotler, Ph.D.
No ceremony. Minimal stage business. This session brings you directly to one of the hottest topics in the not-for-profit world: marketing your association.
Dr. Kotler is hailed as the world's foremost expert on the strategic practice of marketing. He "wrote the book" on marketing–"Marketing Management," now in its 12th edition, "Kotler on Marketing: How to Create, Win, and Dominate Markets, Strategic Marketing for NonProfit Organizations," and dozens more.
He will share his own provocative thoughts on the marketing and branding of associations–then participate in a spirited conversation featuring James Gilmore, co-author of The Experience Economy; Marti Barletta, CEO of TrendSight and author of Marketing to Women; and Stan Slap, consultant, and branding expert.

...and at one of our 12 Thought Leader Super Sessions...
|
"Learning: The Fire in the Belly of Successful Organizations," with Elliott Masie
A successful leader or a successful organization wakes up every morning raring to learn. Yet, most of our conversation is about training. These are two very different processes. Learning is about what your members and staff actually learn. Training is what you hope to deliver. Associations that refocus their efforts on learning will be at the core of future growth. Elliott Masie, one of the world's leading experts in the field of learning, will address the significant changes that associations can make to increase learning for their members and staff. He will address learning tools, economics and hurdles; the role of technology in learning; profiles in learning; and myths about training.

New! To maximize your learning opportunities, the Annual Meeting & Exposition starts on Saturday, August 13 at 3:00 p.m. this year!
