ASAE Files Comments on FTC Spam Regulations
ASAE filed comments last week with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on the agency's proposed rules implementing the CAN-SPAM Act, passed to combat unsolicited commercial e-mail, or spam.
In its comments, ASAE has argued that the FTC's proposal to shorten the time within which an organization must honor an opt-out request from 10 to three business days is "impractical and places a significant burden on associations," particularly small-staff associations.
"Small associations that do not have extensive technical support will be better able to honor an opt-out request in 10 business days than they would in three...," ASAE said.
ASAE also restated its belief that most electronic messages from associations to their members are "transactional or relationship" messages, and therefore not commercial in nature. The FTC defines "transactional or relationship" messages as messages with the primary purpose "to deliver goods or services that the recipient is entitled to receive under the terms of a transaction that the recipient has previously agreed to enter into with the sender." If the FTC would officially adopt this position, it would exempt most association electronic messages from the provisions of the CAN-SPAM Act.

Community Card Deck–50 Ideas to Help People Connect at Meetings
Build community at your next meeting! The Community Building Card Deck offers many possibilities to design your meetings in ways that enhance personal connections and increase the value of participation–whether you design a committee meeting for 10 or a large-scale convention for thousands. Here is an example of a community card entitled, Welcoming Guests.
|
Meet-and-Greet Team
Involve individuals in creating a welcoming atmosphere to ensure that hospitality is experienced throughout your meeting.
Solicit a corps of volunteers to serve as part of your meet-and-greet team. (You can recruit additional people onsite). This team can make people feel more of a part of the organization and welcome at the particular event. Orient the team to your goals for the effort including greeting people, thanking them for coming and reaching out to individuals who look confused. Train them to be able to answer common questions about your meeting. Involve them at registration and at important places, such as outside general sessions, exhibit halls and banquets.
Tips: Provide the volunteers with a small supply of venue maps, program books and other related materials that someone might need. At your final session recognize the meeters and greeters. |
