Mollohan Rejects Hastert's Approval System for Travel

House Ethics Committee ranking member Alan Mollohan (D-WV) reportedly sent a letter Friday, July 29 to House Speaker Dennis Hastert rejecting his request that the committee establish a formal approval system for privately funded member travel.

According to National Journal's CongressDaily, Mollohan said changes to committee operations need to be made on a bipartisan basis within the House rules, and argued that the current rules as written are not difficult to understand. "I believe we can all agree that members who are sophisticated enough to pass the laws of the land are sophisticated enough to understand the House rules on privately funded travel," he wrote.

Hastert has been suggesting for months the idea of broadening the role of the Ethics Committee to create a "clearinghouse" for members to seek approval before they take any privately funded trips, a move clearly intended to eliminate any scrutiny or confusion about congressional travel rules.
