Travel Industry Girding for Possible Flu Pandemic
Travel industry leaders engaged in a sobering discussion of the possible impact of a pandemic influenza outbreak on the U.S. economy and business operations at a Dec. 7 program in Washington, DC.
Led by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), the discussion included an update from U.S. Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Alex Michael Azar II, whose department has developed a checklist for large businesses to ensure preparedness and mitigate the potential impact if such a pandemic were to occur. President Bush has recently ordered a coordinated government strategy that includes establishing an international partnership on avian and pandemic flu; the stockpiling of vaccines and antiviral medications; and expansion of early-warning systems in the U.S. and abroad. The federal government has established a Web site for pandemic-related information at www.pandemicflu.gov.
The president’s flu preparedness plan is budgeted at $7.1 billion, but appears likely to be cut down as Congress considers various appropriations. The Defense Department’s spending bill remains the most likely vehicle for flu money, according to National Journal’s CongressDaily.

As an introduction into the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program, associations and nonprofits will have the unique opportunity to participate in a pilot application program to be launched in January 2006. The Nonprofit Pilot offers eligible nonprofits and associations the opportunity to become acclimated to the program and receive feedback from a private-sector team of examiners.
“ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership will reach out to the association community and encourage eligible organizations to participate in the pilot application process as well as educate association executives on the significance of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and how to become successful participants when the program is extended to our sector in 2007,” said John H. Graham IV, CAE, president and CEO of ASAE.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the association executives to share their best practices to not only those within our community, but to those within the private and government sectors. As the program moves forward, we anticipate working with associations to improve and strengthen organizational performance,” said Susan Sarfati, CAE, president and CEO of The Center for Association Leadership and executive vice president of ASAE.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) fiscal year 2006 appropriation provided the Baldrige National Quality Program with $7 million, allowing the nonprofit category to proceed.
