ASAE Tracking ‘Supporting Organizations’ Provision In Senate Tax Package
ASAE, with the support of accounting firm Tate & Tryon, has been carefully examining the “supporting organizations” provisions contained within the Senate tax reconciliation package. (Similar provisions are not included in the House version).
This is a very complex issue and there are two memos written by Tate & Tryon posted to ASAE’s Web site that fully explain the implications for associations. These can be viewed here.
In general, the provisions under review pertain to certain relationships between a supporting organization, which is a specifically defined 501(c)(3), and a supported organization, which is usually a 501(c)(6) trade or professional association. As the Senate provisions attempt to further regulate such relationships, ASAE is concerned that such efforts may ultimately impact the relationship between some associations and their related foundations.
ASAE remains committed to following this issue when Congress resumes its considerations on the tax reconciliation packages this year. In the meantime, if you believe your association and related foundation may be affected by the proposed legislation, please contact Jim Clarke, CAE, senior vice president, public policy, at 202/626-2703 or jclarke@asaenet.org.
For more information on public policy issues, visit the public policy section of the ASAE Web site at http://www.asaenet.org/.

Speak Up! Your Boards of Directors Want Your Feedback!
The Boards of Directors of ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership have heard the message that our members want to be involved, and this is your opportunity to speak up by providing feedback on the drafts of:
1. The Strategic Plan for ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership, and 2. The Recommendations of the Membership Task Force of ASAE & The Center.
At our meetings in November 2005, the Boards of Directors of ASAE & The Center reviewed these two reports, and both have the potential to benefit every member. Since the Annual Meeting in Nashville, our Volunteer Leadership—including both Boards and Section Councils—provided input and direction to these plans. The Boards have approved their general direction and intent. Now it’s your turn. Your feedback is essential to ensuring that these plans reflect the needs and values of our members. As we prepare to make these final and begin our implementation, the Boards are requesting that all members of ASAE & The Center provide their feedback between now and January 31, 2006.
You can link to the instructions by clicking here, http://www.asaenet.org/GeneralDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=14594 or by visiting the ASAE & The Center’s Web site at www.asaenet.org. The link is on the homepage. To access the drafts and feedback forms, members will need to log in to the site.
Thank you!

Don't Miss Two Upcoming Virtual Seminar Programs
Eight Super Trends Affecting Associations January 18, 2006, 2:00–3:30 p.m. EST Members $179, Nonmembers $279 Virtual seminar
Register for one site and include your entire staff!
If you’re like most association executives, you’re time-pressed, and always have limited opportunities to explore the larger trends affecting your organization. ASAE & The Center can help you fill that gap through ongoing environmental scanning.
Environmental scanning looks outside the association to discover current trends. From trends affecting your profession or industry to larger trends affecting all associations, this valuable tool lends critical insight for the future of your association. Compiled by a research team led by Dr. Karl Albrecht, the 2005 ASAE & The Center environmental scan process collected and analyzed trends according to the strategic radar model, which divides an organization’s business environment into eight inter-related sectors.
In this seminar you will...
- Gain an overview of eight “super-trends,” one in each of the eight environmental sectors: customer, competitor, economic, technological, social, political, legal and geophysical;
- Discover the special challenges associations face as a result of the super-trends;
- Learn how you can apply this trend information to your association’s strategy development process; and
- Uncover methods for tying the trends to specific business outcomes.
The start of a new year is a great time to step back from the every-day and explore larger issues and trends important to your association.
Use this seminar to get started! Register now!

Conventional wisdom says that your association's success depends on you being "right." You need the right strategic plan, the right membership benefits, the right percentage of non-dues revenue—the list goes on.
But long-term success is not about being "right." It is more about being prepared—prepared to deal with everyday challenges and the unthinkable. Association leaders must be able to anticipate where their organizations are headed and select effective strategies to address the future. Genuine long-term success requires organizational resilience that is built into the very fabric of the enterprise.
This Knowledge Quest will prepare you to take on organizational development and renewal challenges. The Quest is a seven-month learning experience providing resources, dialogue and a network to support renewal in your organizations and in the association community as a whole.
The Knowledge Quest launches in February 2006 and will continue through the ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership’s Annual Meeting in Boston (August 19–22, 2006). It will provide a highly-interactive learning experience including in-person meetings, online conversations and live telephone and Internet chats. You will benefit from the opportunity to work with experienced peers, the facilitators and appropriate resources.
