100+ Advocates Take Association Message to Hill
More than 100 association professionals from 32 states paid visits to congressional staff on Capitol Hill last week, carrying important messages about specific issues impacting associations along with statistics confirming the value of associations in society.
The participants in ASAE’s two-day 2006 Legislative Fly-In March 22–23 urged Hill staff to support legislation allowing small business health plans (S. 1955), and discussed a number of oversight issues impacting 501(c)(6) trade associations and 501(c)(3) charities and foundations. The SBHPs bill, introduced by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), passed the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee March 15 and awaits floor action.
Fly-In participants also left packets with Hill offices summarizing ASAE’s recently completed “Value of Associations” study, conducted by Harris Interactive Inc. for ASAE’s Associations Advance America Committee. The research provides strong evidence of how associations allocate resources, and the positive role they play in educating the American workforce post-college; setting standards and professional codes of ethics; promoting volunteerism and community service; and maintaining a robust economy.
On March 22, the Fly-In participants were at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, attending education sessions on advocacy and getting briefed on the latest news from the Hill. They also attended a joint luncheon with the ASAE Board of Directors, highlighted by a presentation on the importance of grassroots involvement by Gary LaBranche, CAE, president and CEO of the Association Forum of Chicagoland.

A Barometer for Your Success in the Business World
Beyond Ethics: Accountability April 5, 2006 9:00–11:00 a.m. Marriott at Metro Center, 775 12th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005 Register today!
Ethics is a major topic in every business sector, and the meetings industry is no different. Right or wrong? Legal or illegal? These are questions we face throughout our careers regardless of which side of the industry we represent. There is another level of professionalism we face if we want to achieve success, though, and that is accountability. Finding the balance between professional and personal responsibility is the key to navigating the gray area of accountability in determining what is best for you and your organization.
This session will partner knowledgeable ethics experts from the world of academia with business leaders. They will first engage in a panel discussion and then lead smaller breakouts to discuss an accountability scenario. The panel will then reassemble to report findings and engage in questions and answers.
